Veterans War Memorial

The Pickens County Veterans War Memorial, Garden and Wall of Valor (photo to left) honors General Andrew Pickens and the people of Pickens County who fought and died in all our wars. It is multi-cultural and multi-national. From frontier Pendleton District and the Carolina Indian Wars and the Revolutionary War to modern Pickens County and the Global War on Terrorism, the Memorial features a bronze statue of General Andrew Pickens overlooking the names of the Pickens War Dead on the Wall of Valor. With bronze plaques, the British Garrison at Fort Prince George is honored through noting the death of Lieutenant Coytmore and the Cherokee Indian Chiefs who fell in battle during the Carolina Indian Wars. The plaque dedicated to the War of American Independence recognizes the Jewish Patriot Francis Salvadore who was killed in battle at Clemson. A monument honors three of Pickens County’s African-American Soldiers who were the first to die in our wars. A small garden is dedicated to the four Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and there is a monument to the County’s only War Correspondent, Ben Roberston. The statue of General Pickens is dedicated in honor of all the textile workers from Pickens County who served on the home front during our wars.

Directions: The Pickens County War Memorial Garden and Wall of Valor is located in Pickens behind the Pickens County Courthouse outside at the south portico entrance. It is one block from the Pickens County Museum and downtown and two blocks from the Hagood-Mauldin House. It is accessible from SC Hwy’s 8 183 and 178.

• Assistance in filing application for burial marker/burial benefits (if applicable) and obtaining a flag for the Deceased member's family

Wartime Service (excluding wars which began prior to 1900)

• Mexican Border period: May 9, 1916 through April 5, 1917 - if the veteran served in Mexico, on the borders thereof or the waters adjacent thereto.
• World War I: April 16th, 1917 through November 11, 1918, inclusive. If the veteran served with U.S. forces in Russia, the ending date is April 1, 1920. Service after November 11, 1918 and before July 2, 1921 is considered World War I service if the veteran also served in the active military, naval, or air service after April 5, 1917 and before November 12, 1918.
• World War II: December 7, 1941 through December 31, 1946, inclusive. If the veteran was in service on December 31, 1946, continuous service before July 26, 1947 is considered World War II service.
• Korean Conflict: June 27, 1950 through January 31, 1955, inclusive.
• Vietnam Era: February 28, 1961 through May 7, 1975, inclusive, if the veteran served in Vietnam during that period. In all other cases, August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975, inclusive.
• Persian Gulf War: August 2, 1990 through a (future) date to be prescribed by Presidential proclamation or law.
